breast implantsThe time before breast augmentation is usually filled with a great deal of excitement. In our office, we enjoy seeing the anticipation in our patients as we work together to make considerate choices regarding the type, size, and shape of implants that are right for them. In spite of the time that is spent prior to surgery, some patients eventually choose to have their breast implants removed. There are several reasons this may happen. Some patients worry about breast implant illness. Some feel that their breasts no longer align with who they are and what they want to portray. For whatever reason breast implant removal is desired, the process need not be complicated. Here, we suggest a few starting points.

How to Approach Breast Implant Revision

It is important for every patient to understand that they are not obligated to return to their original surgeon for breast revision surgery. This is especially relevant for patients unhappy with the cosmetic outcome of their procedure. Even when patients are generally happy with the results of their initial surgery, they should confirm that their surgeon has just as much experience performing revision procedures as they do augmentation surgery. The two are very different and revision takes much more attention to detail. To achieve the best results, it is ideal to consult with a reconstructive plastic surgeon like Dr. David Bogue.

When removing existing breast implants, it is imperative to consider all tissue that may be affected. Dr. Bogue performs breast implant revision using the en bloc technique. This method removes the implants as well as the capsular tissue and all extruded materials. This is also referred to as a total capsulectomy. After removal, tissue undergoes pathological examination in a reputable lab to confirm the absence of abnormal cells.

Breast implant removal cannot occur without ancillary techniques to restore a natural-looking breast mound. Patients who want to remove their breast implants are not obligated to replace them with new implants. While that is an option that many patients choose, it is also possible to correct the breast mound using the most appropriate breast lift technique.

Breast implant revision is a surgical procedure that requires a significant amount of thought and creativity. To learn more about Dr. Bogue’s unique qualifications and approach to breast implant removal and revision, contact our Boca Raton office at 561-886-1000.
