BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers are both injectable treatments, but they work in fundamentally different ways. BOTOX stops targeted muscle activity, while dermal fillers restore volume beneath the skin.
The best choice depends on what is causing the concern you want to address. Some patients benefit from one treatment, while others may benefit from using both.
How Does BOTOX Work?
BOTOX temporarily blocks the nerve signal that causes a treated muscle to contract. By stopping repetitive muscle activity, it improves expression-related wrinkles.
At his Boca Raton practice, Dr. Bogue commonly uses BOTOX to treat:
- Forehead lines
- Glabellar or “11” lines
- Crow’s feet
Results may begin to appear within 3–5 days and generally last 4–6 months. Most patients choose treatment two to four times per year.
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Dermal fillers add volume rather than affecting muscle movement. Dr. Bogue uses hyaluronic acid fillers from the Juvéderm® family, including Juvéderm Ultra, Ultra Plus and Voluma.
Depending on the product and treatment plan, filler may be used to enhance the lips, restore cheek volume, soften facial folds or improve other areas affected by volume loss.
The filler may initially be palpable beneath the skin. As the hyaluronic acid attracts water, the treated area generally becomes smoother and the result more apparent.
Dr. Bogue does not use filler for facial scars or under-eye hollows.
Which Treatment Is Better for Wrinkles?
The cause of the wrinkle determines the appropriate treatment:
- Wrinkles created primarily by muscle movement are usually better suited to BOTOX.
- Creases or contours caused by volume loss may respond better to dermal filler.
- Very fine lines around the mouth may be better addressed with treatments such as laser resurfacing or chemical peels.
- Significant jowling or deep facial folds may not be adequately corrected with injectables alone.
During a consultation, Dr. Bogue will explain what an injectable can realistically improve and when another approach may be more appropriate.
Can BOTOX and Fillers Be Used Together?
Yes. BOTOX and dermal fillers address different causes of facial aging, so they can be used together when appropriate. However, not every patient needs both.
Dr. Bogue recommends only the treatment that addresses the patient’s specific anatomy, concerns and goals.
How Are Injectable Treatments Priced?
BOTOX is priced at a flat rate of $250 per treatment area. The forehead, glabella and crow’s feet are each considered one area. A complimentary touch-up is available one week later when additional treatment is needed in the original area.
Juvéderm Ultra, Ultra Plus and Voluma are $800 per syringe. Dr. Bogue generally reserves approximately 10–15% of the syringe for a one-week touch-up when appropriate. The complimentary touch-up does not include an additional full syringe.
Injectable consultations are complimentary, and same-day treatment may be available when Dr. Bogue is in the office.
