Medically reviewed by David Bogue, MD, board-certified plastic surgeon.
Tummy tuck recovery generally takes about six weeks for most daily activities, although healing continues for several months. Your individual timeline depends on whether you have a full or mini tummy tuck, how much skin is removed, whether the abdominal muscles are repaired, and whether your operation is combined with another procedure.
Dr. Bogue provides detailed instructions based on each patient’s operation and progress. The timeline below is a general guide and does not replace your personalized postoperative plan.

What Is the Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline?
Most patients begin light walking the day after surgery, return to desk work at approximately two weeks, gradually increase cardiovascular exercise after three to four weeks, and resume lifting after six weeks with Dr. Bogue’s approval. Focused abdominal exercises generally wait until approximately three months.
The First Few Days
Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you during the initial recovery period. Begin brief, gentle walks on the first day after surgery to support circulation. After a full tummy tuck, rest with your upper body and knees supported and expect to walk slightly flexed at the waist to reduce tension on the incision.
Discomfort, swelling, tightness, and bruising are expected early in recovery. Take medications and follow wound-care instructions exactly as prescribed. Contact the office if you have a concern rather than changing your postoperative routine on your own.
Around Two Weeks
Many patients with desk-based jobs return to work around two weeks after surgery. Patients with physically demanding occupations, extensive muscle repair, or combined procedures may need more time. Full tummy tuck patients may still walk somewhat flexed during the first two to three weeks.
Three to Four Weeks
Cardiovascular activity may gradually increase after three to four weeks if Dr. Bogue confirms that healing is progressing appropriately. Continue following all lifting restrictions and avoid abdominal exercises.
Six Weeks
Most patients can resume lifting and more strenuous activity at approximately six weeks. A compression garment is worn continuously for six weeks, except when showering. Recovery varies, so clearance is based on your examination and progress rather than the calendar alone.
Approximately Three Months
Sit-ups and other focused abdominal exercises may generally resume at approximately three months with Dr. Bogue’s approval. Swelling and scar maturation continue beyond the initial recovery period, and final results become clearer as healing progresses.
How Does Recovery Differ After a Full or Mini Tummy Tuck?
Full Tummy Tuck Recovery
A full tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin and may include repair of separated abdominal muscles. Drawing the skin downward creates tension during early healing, which is why patients generally walk slightly flexed for the first two to three weeks.
A significant muscle repair can increase discomfort and may temporarily make taking a deep breath more difficult. Patients with a wider muscle repair or a longer combined operation may benefit from an overnight hospital stay. Many patients undergoing a tummy tuck alone can safely return home the same day.
Mini Tummy Tuck Recovery
A mini tummy tuck removes a smaller amount of skin below the belly button and does not require an incision around the belly button. Recovery is generally easier than recovery from a full tummy tuck.
- Patients go home the same day.
- Flexed walking is generally unnecessary.
- Patients may sleep in any comfortable position.
- The compression garment is worn for six weeks.
- Cardiovascular exercise may usually resume at approximately two weeks.
- Lifting restrictions generally end at six weeks.
- Most patients have no activity restrictions after six weeks.
How Long Are Drains Used After a Tummy Tuck?
One drain is typically used after a full tummy tuck and is usually removed within one to two weeks. A drain may be used when a mini tummy tuck is combined with liposuction, but it may not be necessary when liposuction is not performed. Dr. Bogue determines drain removal based on your operation, fluid output, and healing.
Will I Need to Stay Overnight?
Many patients undergoing a tummy tuck alone return home the same day. Some full tummy tuck patients spend one night in the hospital, particularly when a substantial muscle repair is performed or the tummy tuck is part of a longer combined operation. Mini tummy tuck surgery is performed on an outpatient basis.
Dr. Bogue limits operative time, combines procedures only when appropriate, requires medical clearance, encourages early walking, and follows patients closely after surgery.
How Should I Prepare for Tummy Tuck Recovery?
Planning ahead makes the initial recovery period easier and helps you follow your postoperative restrictions. Before surgery:
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you initially.
- Arrange help with children, pets, meals, and household responsibilities.
- Prepare a comfortable sleeping area with support for your upper body and knees.
- Place medications, water, and frequently used items within easy reach.
- Plan adequate time away from work based on the physical demands of your job.
- Follow Dr. Bogue’s medication, garment, activity, wound-care, and follow-up instructions.
If your tummy tuck is combined with breast surgery, liposuction, or a mommy makeover, your recovery plan may differ from the timeline for a tummy tuck alone.
