What’s the Difference Between BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers?
BOTOX® and various dermal fillers are the best-known nonsurgical treatments for facial rejuvenation. They’ve been around for decades, so are very familiar to most people. You may have heard of BOTOX® and different name-brand dermal fillers so often that you know of them but don’t understand exactly how they work. Many newbies to injectables think that every product works the same. That’s not the case.
BOTOX® injections are intended for what are called dynamic wrinkles. This means that the lines and creases are the result of your normal facial movements like squinting, frowning, and smiling. For dynamic wrinkles to be corrected, we must temporarily paralyze the muscles that cause them. We use BOTOX® for concerns like:
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
- Worry lines on the forehead
- Bunny lines on the bridge of the nose
- Drooping eyebrows
- Bands on the neck
Dermal fillers are also used to reverse the appearance of wrinkles. However, they work by plumping the volume of the skin, not by relaxing muscles. Due to the way that dermal fillers increase tissue volume, they are used for a wide variety of improvements. These include:
- Reduction of nasolabial folds around the nose and mouth
- Correction of Marionette lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin
- Chin and jawline augmentation
- Lip plumping
- Cheek augmentation
- Improvement of facial symmetry
- Hand rejuvenation
Do Injectable Treatments Hurt?
We’ve got you covered when it comes to comfort! Injectable treatments are performed with the utmost care. Your trained, skilled provider uses a tiny needle to insert the product, which means you should feel nothing more than a slight pinch. Once the needle is inserted, you don’t feel a thing.
If you feel worried about your injectable treatment being uncomfortable, please let us know! We can explain what you can expect and also discuss ways that we can work together to make your appointment as pleasant and pain-free as possible.
Is Fat Transfer a Better Option than Dermal Fillers for Facial Rejuvenation?
It’s difficult to say that one nonsurgical treatment is better than another. This is because each treatment has advantages and disadvantages. The key is to find out which of those are more important to you!
Fat injections are ideal for people who’ve had injectable dermal fillers in the past. This is because the fat transfer process is not reversible. It’s beneficial to have seen your face “filled’ before committing to the long-term effects of this process. This could be considered a downside to facial fat injections, but it’s also one of the benefits. Some of the fat that is introduced beneath wrinkles or deflated areas of the face will die off. The fat cells that establish blood supply will remain in place indefinitely. This eliminates the need for repeat treatments every few years.
When you consult with us about facial rejuvenation using our nonsurgical techniques, we can explain the nuances of each option. With the understanding you gain during your consultation, you’ll know exactly which cosmetic path you want to take.
How Much Injectable is Needed to Achieve Optimal Results?
Your treatment recommendation will be fully explained prior to us commencing with any injections. There are a few different factors that can influence the amount of product you’ll need to achieve your desired outcome. These include:
- The product or products you select
- The severity and types of wrinkles you want to correct
- Your desired outcome
- The treatments and number of treatments you’ve had previously (especially BOTOX)
- The amount of tissue elasticity and firmness you have
- Your age and overall health history
The only way to know if one of these treatments will be advantageous to you is to discuss your goals with Dr. Bogue. A surgical procedure could be a better fit, especially if you want the longest-lasting results. Although temporary, the results of non-invasive procedures can be maintained with re-treatments. BOTOX® results last 3-4 months, while injectable fillers may last a year or more depending on the brand. Fat grafting is an all-natural form of injectable filler that provides permanent results. Dr. Bogue will help you weigh the pros of non-invasive vs. surgical cosmetic procedures so that you can make an informed decision.
