What is Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is an umbrella brand name for an entire family of biosynthetic dermal fillers. All are made using hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a polysaccharide (sugar) compound that the body makes naturally. Hyaluronic acid plays an important role in your joints, eyes, and also in your skin, where this acid binds to water molecules to support adequate moisture and softness. When you consider getting Juvéderm treatment, you're thinking on the broader spectrum. When you consult with a professional about your particular concerns and goals, you'll discover which Juvéderm product would best meet your needs.

In the Juvéderm family, there are multiple options to choose from. Why? Because each one is manufactured in a specific way that achieves a unique consistency. Some products are designed to be softer and more fluid while others are made to be thicker and more structural in nature. Some of the most common Juvéderm fillers used today include the following.

  • Juvéderm Ultra & Juvéderm Ultra Plus. These non-specific fillers are routinely used to fill in deep lines and creases like the nasolabial folds that develop around the nose and mouth. They can also be used to enhance the lips and cheeks, although Juvéderm now has other products made expressly for those two areas. Juvéderm Ultra has smaller particle sizes than Ultra Plus. As a result, effects may last six to nine months as opposed to up to a year.
  • Juvéderm Voluma XC. This filler is made for the cheek area. Its thicker consistency gives it a structural component that is perfect for adding curves where they are needed to rejuvenate the face.
  • Juvéderm Vollure XC. Made with medium particle sizes and unique flexibility, Vollure XC can reduce the appearance of smile lines, marionette lines, and nasolabial folds without diminishing the natural movement of the tissue in this more mobile area of the face.
  • Juvéderm Volbella. Juvéderm Volbella may be on the opposite end of the spectrum as Voluma. This filler is made to be fine and smooth, perfect for enhancing the shape and volume of the lips without creating an unnatural firmness.

What Can I Expect with a Juvéderm Treatment?

It may be possible to receive your Juvéderm injections at the same appointment as your consultation. First, we sit down with you to listen to your goals. Your provider will also observe your face, skin, tissue, and overall facial contours. They'll also talk to you about your overall health and medical history to ensure that the right product or products are selected. Depending on the area you would like to have treated, your provider may apply a topical numbing cream before beginning injections. Some areas are more sensitive than others. We know what those are and take measures to make sure you do not experience pain. Using a tiny needle, your provider injects the selected filler into precise areas to achieve the desired effect. Your session may take 30 minutes to an hour.

What Happens After a Juvéderm Treatment?

You won't need any downtime to recover from your Juvéderm injections. However, you may have a few restrictions for a day or two. For the first 24 hours, you want to avoid anything that can increase swelling and bruising or potentially displace the filler before it's fully absorbed. If you can, do not apply makeup or other products directly to the area. Avoid sun exposure and areas or activities that can lead to excessive heating of your body. For example, postpone that hot tub date, don't use a sauna, and keep your shower to a nice warm temperature rather than steamy hot. Also, to prevent more bruising than may occur naturally, avoid alcohol consumption, fish oil, ginkgo biloba, garlic, and vitamin E.
