What Are Dermal Fillers, and How Do They Work?
Dermal fillers are injectable gels used to restore volume, soften facial folds, or enhance facial contours. The JUVÉDERM® products Dr. Bogue uses are made with hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in the skin that binds water and adds support beneath the surface.
Unlike BOTOX®, dermal fillers do not stop muscle movement. They are placed at selected depths to replace volume or support a specific facial feature. The product, amount, and injection location are chosen according to the patient’s anatomy and desired result.
What Areas Does Dr. Bogue Treat With Dermal Fillers?
Dr. Bogue uses dermal fillers to address selected areas of facial volume loss or improve facial proportions:
- Lips
- Nasolabial folds extending from the nose toward the mouth
- Marionette lines extending downward from the corners of the mouth
- Fine lines and volume loss around the mouth
- Cheeks and midface volume loss
Not every facial line should be filled. Very fine surface wrinkles around the mouth may respond better to laser resurfacing or chemical peels, while filler may be useful when the concern is related to deeper lines or loss of structural support. Dr. Bogue recommends treatment according to the cause of the concern rather than filling every visible wrinkle.
Which Dermal Fillers Does Dr. Bogue Offer?
Dr. Bogue uses three hyaluronic acid fillers from the JUVÉDERM® collection:
- JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC is commonly used to add or restore lip volume and may also soften selected facial folds.
- JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC provides greater support for deeper wrinkles and folds, including nasolabial folds.
- JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC is placed more deeply to restore cheek and midface volume.
Dr. Bogue selects the product according to the treatment area, tissue characteristics, and desired degree of correction. Not every patient needs the same product or a full syringe in every area.
How Much Do Dermal Fillers Cost at Dr. Bogue’s Boca Raton Practice?
JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, and VOLUMA® XC are each priced at $800 per syringe. The number of syringes recommended depends on the treatment area, volume loss, and desired result.
Every injection is performed personally by Dr. Bogue. The cosmetic consultation and one-week follow-up with a limited touch-up, when appropriate, are complimentary. The touch-up is intended for minor refinement and does not include an additional syringe. Any additional syringe is priced separately.
When Will I See Results, and How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?
Results are visible immediately, although swelling may temporarily affect the appearance during the first several days. The filler may also be palpable at first. As the hyaluronic acid attracts water and integrates with the surrounding tissue, the treated area generally becomes smoother and the result more apparent.
Duration varies by product and patient:
- JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC: up to one year
- JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC: up to 18 months
- JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC: up to two years
These are general ranges with optimal treatment, and individual results vary.
Is There Any Downtime After Dermal Filler Treatment?
Most patients return to their usual activities immediately. Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising may occur at the injection sites. Swelling is often more noticeable in the lips and generally improves over the following several days.
Avoid strenuous exercise for the remainder of the day, and do not massage or press on the treated areas unless Dr. Bogue instructs you to do so. Plan treatment ahead of an important event in case swelling or bruising occurs.
Are Dermal Fillers Safe?
Dermal fillers are generally well tolerated, but every injection carries potential risks. Common temporary effects include swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, firmness, or small irregularities at the treatment site.
The most serious complication is accidental injection into a blood vessel, which can cause skin injury and, very rarely, vision loss or stroke. Dr. Bogue’s knowledge of facial anatomy, careful product placement, and conservative approach help minimize these risks. Because JUVÉDERM® products contain hyaluronic acid, they can be dissolved with hyaluronidase when medically appropriate, although prompt evaluation remains essential if a complication is suspected.
Do Dermal Fillers Look Natural?
Dermal fillers can produce a natural-looking result when the product, amount, and placement are matched to the patient’s facial anatomy. An overfilled appearance usually results from excessive volume, poor placement, or repeated treatment without reassessing facial proportions.
Dr. Bogue takes a conservative approach, focusing on restoring support and improving facial balance rather than filling every line. The complimentary one-week follow-up allows him to evaluate the result after swelling subsides and determine whether any minor refinement is appropriate.
