Your face is often the first area to show signs of aging such as lines and wrinkles and loss of volume in the cheeks and under your eyes. These issues are a fact of life, but there are many ways to combat the natural aging process, including the facelift. This facial plastic surgery has come a long way since the "windblown" appearance once associated with it. The procedure focuses on natural-looking results that restore youthful facial contours by tightening the underlying structures of your face and removing excess skin.

If you're interested in a facelift, contact our board-certified plastic surgeon in Boca Raton today at (561) 886-1000 to schedule your consultation. Dr. David Bogue provides experienced plastic surgery and nonsurgical cosmetic treatments to patients in the surrounding areas of Florida, including Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Delray Beach.

There are many moving parts to the facelift process, from your initial consultation to your final follow up. Some facelift details you need to know include:

Why Does the Skin Age?

There are two proteins found in the skin and connective tissues that are responsible for youthful, taut skin. Collagen promotes firm skin while elastin supplies elasticity. Your body produces less of these components as you get older. Collagen production slows by one percent each year, beginning in your early to mid-twenties. Your skin also loses the ability to "bounce back" from repeated facial expressions and movements due to the loss of elastin as well as the loss of skin moisture. These are standard parts of the aging process but can be exacerbated by your genetics and lifestyle habits such as excessive sun exposure, tobacco use, poor diet, and lack of exercise.

That loss of structure causes fat distribution changes in the face as well, which leads to volume loss in the cheeks, giving a hollow, gaunt appearance and "jowling." Jowling occurs when fat and sagging skin accumulate below the chin along the jawline. Those who frequently "yo-yo diet," and lose weight suddenly and those who were very thin, to begin with often experience volume loss and deep lines and wrinkles. Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause and menopause significantly impact the appearance of your skin and facial structure as well.

What Can a Facelift Accomplish?

A facelift aims to address the signs of aging discussed above by tightening the underlying tissues of the face to restore youthful contours and removing excess skin. Facelift surgery addresses several cosmetic concerns at once, including:

  • Sagging skin around the cheeks
  • Deep creases around the nose and mouth
  • Hollow cheeks caused by descending fat
  • Lower face jowling
  • Loss of jawline definition

Some men and women choose to have a combination of procedures, such as the facelift, neck lift, and eyelid surgery, done in one operation to create a harmonious rejuvenation effect.

The Facelift Procedure

Dr. Bogue will create youthful facial contours by tightening the loose internal tissues to improve multiple facial areas, correct jowls, address hollowing cheeks, and reduce creases. He will utilize small incisions around your ears, which will hide the resulting scars. Once the muscles and tissues have been tightened, the skin is re-draped over the new facial contour and excess skin removed.

The facelift requires you to go under general anesthesia so you will not be awake for the procedure. Depending on the extent of changes and whether you've combined additional facial plastic surgeries, your surgery will take three to six hours.

A neck lift or eyelid surgery combined with the facelift offers further results, so your neck and eyes don't give away your age. Cosmetic treatments such as injectables are often used to compliment or maintain facelift results and add volume.

Dr. David Bogue specializes in facial plastic surgery and is considered a leader in the plastic surgery field. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In the hands of our experienced plastic surgeon, your facelift results will make you look younger, not pulled.

Facelift Recovery

The facelift is typically an outpatient procedure but does require general anesthesia, so you will need a friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24-48 hours. The most common symptom of facelift recovery is swelling during the first few weeks, which may take several months to resolve completely. Dr. Bogue will give you post-operative instructions, which should be followed precisely to ensure proper healing.

Pain during facelift recovery is typically mild and is often at the incision sites around the ear. He may provide medications to reduce pain, but over-the-counter options such as ibuprofen and Advil work well. Most patients feel comfortable being in public after one to two weeks, so use your judgment to determine when you can return to work. Someone who works a desk job can often return to their work sooner than someone who works an active job that requires physical labor.

Candidates for a Facelift

This is a surgical procedure, so it is essential that facelift candidates be in good overall health and non-smokers. Smoking and tobacco use impact your body's healing abilities and can increase certain risks of complications. Candidates for a facelift are generally 50 or older and have significant jowling and sagging skin. Although men and women in their 40s can also benefit from facial plastic surgery.

Dr. Bogue will discuss your cosmetic concerns during your one-on-one consultation and determine if a facelift or another procedure will best achieve your desired look. Facelift candidates should have realistic expectations for what a facelift can accomplish and understand the associated risks.

The Cost of a Facelift by Dr. Bogue

At our Boca Raton office, a facelift with Dr. Bogue starts around $4,000 but varies based on your individual goals and complexity of the technique used. If you add another facial plastic surgery, this will affect the price. The cost of a facelift encompasses several fees and expenses, from the plastic surgeon's fee to anesthesiologist and surgical facility costs. Dr. Bogue and our staff will give you a comprehensive quote during your initial consultation.

We offer financing options such as CareCredit, which provides healthcare financing for patients at different rates than your average credit card or loan. Dr. Bogue takes insurance, and while a facelift is an entirely elective procedure, an eyelid lift is sometimes covered if drooping eyelids are affecting your vision.

Questions About Facelift Surgery

Many of our patients have questions about facelift surgery, which is why it's important to do your research and come prepared to your consultation with a list of queries. Some of the most commonly asked include:

How Does a Facelift Work?

The process of a facelift begins with your initial consultation to determine which facial plastic surgery will achieve your desired results. The procedure involves an incision in front of and behind the ear and works to improve severe lines around the mouth, hollowing cheeks, and sagging skin and fat in the chin and jawline. BOTOX® Cosmetic, dermal fillers, eyelid surgery, and neck lifts can also be used to provide a comprehensive, youthful look.

Will My Facelift Results Look Natural?

The early facelifts focused solely on lifting the skin and removing excess, which resulted in the overpulling of skin that created a windswept look that didn't look natural. Facelifts today address the underlying connective tissues and re-drape the skin without stretching, and scarring is less visible. Plastic surgeons have a more comprehensive understanding of the musculature of the face, which offers effective, natural-looking facelift outcomes.

How Long is the Facelift Recovery?

Typically, patients go back to work within one to two weeks, but your full facelift results won't settle in for several months as the swelling takes time to go down, and your facial structure adjusts to the new contour.

Will a Facelift Make Me Look 10 Years Younger?

The facelift procedure does not remove ten years off your appearance but instead gives you a tighter, refreshed look that will have your friends and family saying you look young for your age.

How Long Does a Facelift Last?

The longevity of your facelift results vary from person to person and depend on genetics, weight fluctuations, and sun exposure. Your age at the time of the procedure will also impact how long your results last. Many patients are happy with their facelift for 10-15 years, while others may want a revision facelift or "touch up" after five years. You can also maintain your results through cosmetic treatments such as injectables.
