What To Expect With a Liposuction

Struggling with fat loss and not seeing the results you want can be demoralizing and discouraging. Despite the health benefits gained through lifestyle changes, you still may not have your ideal body. Liposuction may be able to help. With liposuction being a top five cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States, liposuctions are popular and relatively safe.

By removing stubborn fat, they can help smooth, tighten, and refine areas you’ve already been toning. Let’s take a look at liposuction from how it works to what to expect during and after your procedure.

What Does Liposuction Do?

Affecting target areas nearly anywhere on the body, from chin to ankle, liposuction utilizes suction to remove fat from the body.

Your body uses fat cells to store fat. In traditional fat loss methods, such as diet and exercise, your body does not immediately get rid of the fat cells. Think of fat cells like a box —even if you empty the box, the box itself remains. This leaves you susceptible to regaining the lost fat. Liposuction removes the box. Fat cells are removed, which in turn leaves you with a slimmer, more tailored physique.

What Happens During Liposuction Procedure?

During the procedure, you may be placed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia, depending on both the location of liposuction and the number of treatment areas. After this, an incision is made and fat is dislodged making way for fat removal. Finally, the incisions are treated.

There are a few types of liposuction that differ primarily in the way they dislodge the fat to be removed, such as utilizing a saline solution or even ultrasonic vibrations to break apart the fat.

What To Expect After Liposuction Surgery?

Like with any surgical procedure, you can expect bruising, swelling, and discomfort in the affected areas as your body begins to heal. This will typically disappear in the coming weeks. During this time you may also be asked to wear a compression garment to help with inflammation and to also allow the skin to contour.

Your doctor may recommend a skin tightening procedure in the event there is excess skin or if your skin is unable to tighten naturally.
