If you struggle with stubborn pockets of excess fat that seem unresponsive to diet and exercise, you may turn to liposuction as an effective way to achieve the contoured look you desire. Liposuction can remove deposits of fat in many different areas of the body, including your thighs, abdomen, upper arms, and buttocks.
But after the fat is skillfully removed by our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Bogue, can it come back? The short answer is no, it typically can’t come back. However, you can still gain weight after liposuction, and that may affect your results.
Understanding Fat Cells
The number of fat cells that you have in your body typically increases throughout your childhood and adolescence before leveling off during adulthood. So, when you gain or lose weight you do not gain or lose fat cells. Instead, they simply grow or shrink in size. That is why you may struggle with fatty deposits, since weight loss can only shrink the excess cells and not eliminate them.
Liposuction is not a weight loss method because the procedure does not change the size of your fat cells. Instead, Dr. Bogue will actually remove stubborn fat cells from the treatment area. Since the fat cells are gone and your body does not generally produce new cells to replace them, the results should be permanent. However, if you gain weight the remaining fat cells in the treatment area can grow, which can have a negative impact on the contour of your body.
Maintaining Your Results
Liposuction can’t replace a healthy lifestyle, but it can be performed alongside your current diet and exercise regimen to help you achieve your aesthetic goals. After your procedure, you should see an improved body contour as the swelling subsides. There are some steps that you can take to ensure that your results are long-lasting.
After liposuction, make sure that you:
- Follow Dr. Bogue’s post-operative instructions: Dr. Bogue will let you know when you can resume your normal activities and exercise routine. You may be advised to wear a compression garment to help compress your skin to your new contours. Following these directions can help you achieve the best possible results.
- Be mindful of what you eat: Make sure that you are eating a healthy, balanced diet. Excessive calorie consumption could lead to weight gain.
- Exercise regularly:Â Exercise is crucial when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight and ensuring your liposuction results are here to stay.
Aside from the natural changes that come with the aging process, such as a loss of firmness, your results should be relatively permanent. Dr. Bogue may recommend an additional procedure, such as a tummy tuck, if you want to correct excess, sagging skin that cannot be treated with liposuction.
