Before receiving dermal fillers, ask what the treatment can realistically correct, which product and amount are appropriate, what risks are involved, what recovery to expect, and how long the result may last. A consultation and examination are necessary because the answers depend on your anatomy and treatment goals.
Dermal filler treatment may look simple, but a natural result requires more than choosing a brand or requesting a certain number of syringes. Dr. Bogue personally performs every filler injection and recommends treatment only after evaluating facial proportions, volume loss, skin quality, and what the patient wants to change.
1. What Can Dermal Fillers Treat?
Dr. Bogue uses dermal fillers for selected concerns related to volume loss or facial proportions, including:
- Lips that would benefit from added or restored volume
- Nasolabial folds extending from the nose toward the mouth
- Marionette lines extending downward from the corners of the mouth
- Selected fine lines and volume loss around the mouth
- Cheek and midface volume loss
He does not use filler for under-eye hollows or facial scars. He also does not recommend filling every visible line. Very fine surface wrinkles may respond better to laser resurfacing or a chemical peel, while significant laxity may require a different approach.
2. Which Filler and How Much Will I Need?
Dr. Bogue uses three hyaluronic acid fillers from the JUVÉDERM® collection:
- Ultra XC for lip volume and selected facial folds
- Ultra Plus XC for deeper wrinkles and folds, including nasolabial folds
- VOLUMA XC for cheek and midface volume

3. What Are the Risks of Dermal Fillers?
Common temporary effects include swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising, firmness, or small irregularities at the injection site. These generally improve as the area settles.
The most serious complication is accidental injection into a blood vessel, which can cause skin injury and, very rarely, vision loss or stroke. This is why knowledge of facial anatomy, careful placement, conservative treatment, and prompt evaluation of concerning symptoms matter. JUVÉDERM products can be dissolved with hyaluronidase when medically appropriate, but dissolvability does not eliminate injection risks.
4. What Is Recovery Like?
Most patients return to work and ordinary activities immediately. Swelling may be more noticeable in the lips and generally improves over several days. Bruising can occasionally persist longer.
Dr. Bogue asks patients to avoid strenuous exercise for the remainder of the treatment day and not to massage or press on the treated areas unless he instructs them to do so. Treatment should be scheduled ahead of an important event in case swelling or bruising occurs.
5. How Long Will My Filler Last?
Longevity varies by product, treatment area, amount, and individual metabolism. General ranges with optimal treatment are:
- JUVÉDERM Ultra XC: up to one year
- JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus XC: up to 18 months
- JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC: up to two years
These are estimates rather than guarantees. A product should be selected for the treatment goal and anatomy—not simply because it may last longer.
How Much Does Filler Cost, and Is a Touch-Up Included?
Each JUVÉDERM filler Dr. Bogue offers is $800 per syringe. The cosmetic consultation and one-week follow-up are complimentary. In most cases, Dr. Bogue reserves approximately 10–15% of the original syringe for a possible touch-up and limited refinement at that visit.
The touch-up does not include an additional syringe. If more product is needed, each additional syringe is priced separately.
